There’s something about surfing and surf movies that I absolutely love. Maybe it’s the sport, the lifestyle, and the sense of freedom in it.
When I met photographer, Chris Burkard, in the hopes of making a SmugMug film with him, I was thinking let’s make a fun surf film, somewhere in the world….I didn’t realize that that might take us to the arctic…

Chris loves to shoot in these sub-zero temperatures in the Arctic Circle and capture moments of raw beauty in conditions that rank among the harshest in the natural world. We spent a week in northern Norway capturing as much as we could: surfing, snow, the fjords, the northern lights and everything in between. We prayed for good weather, that our equipment would not freeze and die and that we could do justice to this amazing environment and the surfers who braved the cold waters.
